The Whitley A55 Workstation in use

On 26 March 2025, Don Whitley Scientific (DWS) Engineers, Joseph Murray and Jake Allen, and Sales Representative, Paul Harrison, completed the installation of a new Whitley A55 Anaerobic Workstation on behalf of North West London Pathology at their hub site at Charing Cross Hospital – replacing their long-serving Whitley A45 Workstation, which had been in use since 2014.

This upgrade marks a continued commitment to high-quality anaerobic research and reliable equipment in the Microbiology Laboratory led by Manager, Manfred Almeida, and his team. The newly installed A55 Workstation joins their existing A55 Workstation (installed in 2014) and Whitley Jar Gassing System, creating a robust suite of anaerobic equipment to support their ongoing microbiology work.

Why the Upgrade?

After 11 years of dependable service, the original A45 – equipped with Instant Access Ports, a removable front, and optional features including the Anaerobic Conditions Monitoring System, Data Logging and Letterbox Entry System – had reached the end of its service life. The decision to upgrade ensures continued reliability, improved performance, and compatibility with the department’s evolving workflow. The team once again went with the Anaerobic Conditions Monitoring option, a front-loading letterbox for quick sample entry and they requested a single point temperature calibration which was completed upon installation, ensuring the temperature controls meet the quality requirements of the lab.

How they use the workstation:

North West London Pathology’s microbiology team use the A55 Workstation to recover anaerobes from patient samples. These bacteria are often involved in serious infections, especially in parts of the body with low oxygen levels such as deep wounds, abscesses, or the gastrointestinal tract. The A55 provides the precise anaerobic conditions needed to culture these organisms for identification and further clinical investigation.

We look forward to continuing our relationship with North West London Pathology and supporting their important microbiological work for many more years to come.
